Kung Fu
Acrylic on found canvas. One frame pulled from Tobias Gremmler's motion studies and pinned down before it finished moving: sharp planes of cool gray and blue stacking like fabric caught mid-fold, a slash of orange breaking the chill like body heat through armor. Made for a show about patterns — this is pattern as residue, the visual leftover of something fast. Read about this process on my Substack
Figurative
Distance portraits - Acrylic on canvas, 12 × 12 in. Begun around 2000, resumed in 2019. Giacometti sat in Paris squares watching figures dissolve into distance — features gone, essence intact. These portraits chase the same effect through a video camera: unrecognizable people pulled from the backgrounds of old footage, built up a stroke at a time until they feel like someone. Nobody in particular. Someone all the same. Read about it on my Substack
Skulk
Skulk comes from a D&D campaign — the most vivid one our table ever ran. When our DM, an art fan, asked for something, a group portrait of the party was the obvious answer. It poured out in one sitting. I meant to paint it in full color. It refused. Black and white was what it wanted.
No painting has ever come this easily. Maybe because we lived the adventure first.
