Thirty years of client work trained me in precision, structure and controlled complexity. Painting is where I give that up. There is no undo, no revision history and no clean finish.
I work in recycled paint and found materials. I build a surface up, erase it, bury marks and dig them back out. Geometric bands and rhythmic dot systems hold against fields of turquoise, lavender, electric pink and dark blue until a gesture cuts through and an older layer comes back to the surface.
The paintings read like landscapes from an adjacent universe. Structure and instability trade places from one canvas to the next, and every decision stays visible.
The studio, Boulder County, Colorado
bil Chamberlin (b. Princeton, New Jersey) is a painter based in Boulder County, Colorado. He interned at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1990, earned his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1991, and has worked in commercial design since 1995.
In 1992 Bernarda Bryson Shahn selected him for Artists Pick Artists at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton.
He paints in a basement studio wrapped in plastic sheeting instead of drywall. His large-scale abstractions bring the rigor of design into the irreversible language of paint, where invention is tactile and risk stays visible.
He also runs Kaninhoved, Danish for "rabbit head," a studio label for prints and objects.
